Prez. Akufo-Addo Appoints New Chief Justice

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo

Aspiring Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo has been nominated by Ghana's President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Due to Justice Kwasi Annin Yeboah's impending retirement from the court on May 24, 2023, this nomination complies with the need for a successor set out in the Constitution.

The President expressed his admiration for Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo's work in a letter to the Council of State. Torkornoo has been on the Supreme Court for four years and has been a member of the judiciary for the previous 19 years.

The Council was requested to accelerate the nomination so that Parliament may consider it as soon as possible. This would ensure that the future Chief Justice is prepared to take office when the present Chief Justice retires.
