All of the miners who were stuck in one of AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi pits in the Ashanti region have been rescued.
Vincent Donkor, an assemblyman from the Anwiam-Ahansony3wodea electoral area, revealed that 11 people believed to be in the country illegally had been imprisoned for roughly five days in the Cote D'or Pit of the AGA.
He said that all 11 of them had entered the Pit to search for gold but were unable to leave because they feared being attacked or detained by the security guards AGA had sent to guard the Pit.
But after the fifth day, they sent signals to their family to ask for assistance after running out of food and water, which were vital for their life.
The problem was brought to the Assemblyman's attention by the family early on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, and it was his follow-up to the AGA and Police that led to the miners' rescue at around 2:00 PM today, Wednesday, October 19.
They all appeared to be guys and had come from the underground in good condition, according to Mr Donkor.
He also said that the local Police were involved in the rescue efforts.
The Assemblyman disputed the assertion that a different story would have been told by now if it weren't for news of President Akufo-working Addo's visit to the Obuasi Municipality today, October 19, 2022, as part of his official tour of the Ashanti region.
