The Nigerian social scene is in mourning following the tragic death of popular socialite Elena Jessica, who passed away due to complications arising from a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery. Her death, which has sparked outrage and grief online, unfolded over a harrowing two-week period marked by medical emergencies, exorbitant hospital bills, and alleged abandonment by the clinic where the procedure was performed.
According to an emotional account shared by her sister, Elena underwent liposuction and a fat transfer to her hips, backside, and calves at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, located in the upscale Ikoyi area of Lagos, on February 6. This was reportedly her second BBL procedure. Initially, things seemed routine, but two days post-surgery, Elena began complaining of severe, immobilizing pain in the treated areas.
Concerned, the family rushed her for medical tests. The results were alarming; her white blood cell count was critically high, indicating a severe infection, while her blood levels had dropped dangerously low, necessitating an immediate transfusion of five pints of blood.
Despite being administered antibiotics, Elena’s condition continued to deteriorate. Medical practitioners suggested another surgery to remove the infected and excess fat. However, as her condition grew more critical, she was advised to seek advanced care at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Unfortunately, no bed was available at the public facility. For five agonizing hours, Elena remained trapped in an ambulance, screaming in pain as her family desperately searched for a hospital that would take her.
The family eventually secured a spot at Emel Hospital in Festac, where the cost of a single day in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was placed at N1.5 million. As her condition worsened, she was moved again to another facility with a specialist surgeon, where the family was confronted with a demand for N6 million to remove the infected fat while she remained in the ICU. It was then confirmed that Elena was fighting a losing battle against sepsis—a life-threatening blood infection caused by the body's response to an infection.
In a desperate bid to save her life, the family liquidated their assets. Elena’s sister revealed that they sold all of Elena’s properties to fund her emergency medical treatment. She also issued a scathing indictment of Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, accusing the facility of abandoning her sister after the initial procedure.
"Cynosure abandoned us," her sister lamented, explaining that with their father retired, the family had exhausted every financial avenue. The financial burden became insurmountable when the treating hospital demanded an additional N4.5 million to continue life-saving care. Unable to raise the funds, the family watched helplessly as Elena Jessica lost her battle for life.
