Another Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing at Nkawkaw

Helicopter Crash

A Volta River Aviation helicopter with registration number 9G-AFW was forced to make an emergency landing on Monday morning at Ampekrom, a suburb of Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.

The aircraft, a Jet A-1 model, was traveling from Accra to Kumasi when harsh weather conditions severely reduced visibility, prompting the pilot to divert and land. Eyewitnesses said the helicopter initially passed over the New Generation School before returning moments later in search of a safe landing spot. For safety, it finally touched down in an open field behind the school.

The headmaster of the school, Bakira Tahiru, told reporters that four people were on board, including two white men, and all escaped unharmed.

This is the second emergency landing involving the same helicopter in less than a week. On Wednesday, August 6, the aircraft made an unscheduled landing at Ajumako Kokoben Community School park in the Central Region while en route to Prestea, also due to poor weather. That incident occurred roughly an hour before a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed eight lives, including two government ministers.

Local residents gathered to witness Monday’s landing, describing the sight as both rare and alarming. The helicopter remained grounded temporarily while the crew monitored weather updates before making further decisions.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the latest incident.
