Prempeh College, a prestigious senior high school in Ghana, has emerged victorious at the 2023 edition of the National Robotics Competition held in Accra.
The competition, organized by the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation (GRAF) and Heritage Christian College (HCC) under the Robotics Inspired Science Education (RiSE) initiative, showcased the talent and ingenuity of young minds eager to embrace the challenges posed by robotics and its applications in science and technology.
With a remarkable display of technical prowess, Prempeh College secured the highest score, earning the honor of representing the country in the upcoming World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in Panama, scheduled for November.
Alongside five other teams from different categories, to be announced by GRAF, they will collectively demonstrate the innovative spirit of Ghana on the international stage.
RiSE, founded in 2011 by GRAF, aims to create problem-solvers and inspire the next generation of Ghanaians in robotics.
Dr. Yaw Okraku-Yirenkyi, Country Director of RiSE and Director of Studies at the Kofi Annan ICT Centre, emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
While encouraging parents to support STEM education, he urged them to instill soft skills such as patience and a positive attitude, essential for success.
Alexander Ekow Asmah, Head of Department for Business and Innovation at HCC, highlighted the significance of robotics in everyday life, particularly in a technologically-driven world.
He stressed the importance of responsible usage, especially with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
The National Robotics Competition saw the participation of various senior high schools (SHSs) and robotics clubs across Ghana.
Prempeh College's victory marks a milestone in the country's quest to nurture talent and innovation in the field of robotics, setting the stage for a promising future of scientific advancement.
