Evacuating Ghanaians from Sudan amid conflict

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, 82 Ghanaians have already been evacuated from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.

On Wednesday, April 26, 77 people were taken to safety in Gedaref, Sudan, and transferred to Ethiopia, while five people—three football players and two employees of an Australian mining company—are being taken to safety through the Egyptian border station of Wadi Halfa, which is located north of Sudan.

According to a press statement on Tuesday, April 25, attempts are still being made to rescue any other Ghanaians who may still be stuck in Sudan.

Sudan has been experiencing civil war for the last week, with the city completely covered in smoke.

The nation's armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting.

Over 3,500 people are alleged to have been injured, while 400 have reportedly been killed in the conflict.

Many people, including nationals of Sudan, have fled from the capital to border towns and countries nearby.

"The Ministry takes this opportunity to inform the general public, particularly, Ghanaians stranded in Sudan to take note of the contact details of its Honorary Consul who is on standby to assist them to be evacuated to safety."
