Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United footballer, has had charges of attempted rape and violence dismissed against him.
The 21-year-old was detained in January of last year in connection with charges involving internet photographs and videos.
Later, he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
The Crown Prosecution Service stated that the charges were dropped after crucial witnesses withdrew their participation.
"We have an obligation to keep cases under continual evaluation," a spokeswoman said.
"In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.
"We have explained our decision to all parties.
"We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met."
The striker, who has made one appearance for England, was barred from playing or training with the Old Trafford club within hours of the claims appearing online in early 2022.
The BBC has approached the club for comment.
Greater Manchester Police stated that it was "only fair" to declare that Greenwood would no longer face criminal charges.
The decision was "not taken lightly," according to Ch Supt Michaela Kerr.
She added: "I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate the force’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them."
