Unknown gunmen have stormed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu State.
This comes only hours after a similar incident in Imo State resulted in the death of a local security guard.
DAVAS NEWS has learned that one police officer on duty was killed in the Enugu incident.
Festus Okoye, INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, verified the occurrence, stating that it occurred about 9:12pm yesterday, Sunday.
According to the statement, the incident was reported by Dr Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State.
He stated that the Commission's security gatehouse was destroyed, but the assailants were unable to gain entrance to the main building due to the quick response of the Police and Army men from 82 Division.
According to reports, the other officer who was injured is being treated at an unnamed facility.
Barr. Chimezie Robinson Nkwuo, Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, also confirmed the attack.
While expressing condolences to the family of the slain officer, he advised citizens not to be afraid to come out and get their Permanent Voter's Card, or PVC.
