Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says major efforts including the digital address system and mobile money interoperability, which were adopted during the government's first term as part of the digital transformation agenda, are paying off.
He stated that previous measures served as the foundation for subsequent programmes such as the National Rental Assistance Scheme, which debuted on Tuesday, January 31.
Speaking at the opening, Vice President Dr Bawumia urged the program's implementing ministry, the Ministry of Works and Housing, not to abdicate its supervision responsibilities in guaranteeing the program's success.
Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Western, Eastern, and Bono East are the first regions to benefit from the initiative.
However, the Vice President stated that it will be spread to the rest of the country sooner rather than later.
Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister of Works and Housing, announced a GH30 million seed fund for the program's launch.
He considered the leading six regions based on greater rent advance concerns documented.
According to Scheme Manager Richard Acheampong, the procedure has been streamlined to the point that even a fifth-grader can complete it.
He did, however, say that each application will be reviewed for affordability before it is approved.
Speaking at the ceremony, Frederick Opoku, Secretary of the National Tenants Union, urged the government to make the application process fair and transparent in order to eliminate favouritism.
Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), urged the government to consider single moms under the scheme.
He stated that the introduction is opportune since it will provide significant relief to many workers.
