Nkusukum Paramount Strips Off Gay Activist Mac Iyalla's Chieftaincy Title After Realizing His Involvement In LGBTQI+

Okesse Essandoh IX, the Paramount Chief of Nkusukum Traditional Area, has repudiated the title bestowed to Davis Mac Iyalla as Amankorahen of Yamoransa in the Central Region.

On Tuesday, January 31, he told journalists at his palace that the process of installing Mr Mac Iyalla as Amankorahen of Yamoransa had been delayed after the traditional council learned that he supported LGBTQ+ activities.

Over the weekend, the Nigerian LGBT rights campaigner was paraded as the new Amankorahen in Nkusukum.

During the procession, however, he fell from the palanquin.

Many viewed this as divine wrath, as gay practices are frowned upon in Ghana's traditional societies.

Okesse Essandoh IX said how Mr Mac Iyalla was nominated to be named a ceremonial chief by certain friends in Cape Coast since he has been helpful in pursuing social development initiatives.

"[After] that, I notified Ebusuampanyinfo of Yamoransa and had a conversation with them, and we agreed to honour him as Amankorahen or Nkosuahen to support Yamoransa," Nkusukum's Paramount Chief explained.

"Nkosuahen is just a ceremonial status that can be given to anybody, regardless of genealogy or connection to any stool."

He was awarded the chieftaincy name Nana Kweku Adu and is said to have demonstrated considerable passion and commitment to Nkusukum's development challenges.

"Nana Kweku Adu has been staying in Cape Coast for over ten years and travels outside the country regularly and comes back," the Paramount Chief said, adding: "It was during the process of his installation as Amankorahen (Nkosuahen) the information came that  Kweku Adu is also known as Davis Mac Iyalla and has been supporting LGBTQI+ and its related activities.

"Immediately this information came to our attention, we called for the whole process of Mac Iyalla to be halted."
