91 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament have signed a petition calling for the return of Honourables Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka Mubarak, and James Avedzi as Minority Leader, Minority Whip, and Deputy Leader, respectively.
The petition, which began this morning with 11 Core MPs from three regions signing, increased to 25, 49, and 62 before a recent update said 91 MPs out of 137 had signed.
More members are likely to sign the petition to the party's National Executive Committee.
According to credible sources, the decision to dismiss the trio was solely the work of National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi kwetey.
According to sources, the decision was not communicated to the Party's Council of Elders, National Executive Committee, Functional Executive Committee, or other organisations.
The petition by NDC MPs calls into question the validity of Cassiel Ato Forson, Kwame Agbodza, and Emmanuel Armah Buah as new leaders to replace the ousted Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka Mubarak, and James Avedzi.
So far, nearly all NDC MPs from the five Northern Regions, as well as those from Western, Central, Ashanti, Greater Accra, Bono East, and Ahafo, have signed.
A handful of Volta Region NDC MPs who signed the petition claim they did so because they feel Avedzi James should continue rather than the New Armah Buah.
The few remaining signatories are largely Volta Region MPs who have failed to sign the petition owing to a dispute within their caucus.
This comes after it was announced that NDC 2020 Flagbearer and former President John Mahama had opposed the leadership change.
Kwesi Pratt, a journalist, disclosed Mahama requested that the decision be delayed.
"The former president did not endorse this," he claimed, based on meetings he had with high party officials.
"I have spoken to many people, and from what I’m told, unless those who spoke to me are a bunch of bloody liars and so on, the former president did not appear to be very happy about this arrangement," Mr. Pratt said on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday.
