Former Finance Minister Prof. Kwesi Botchwey Dies At Age 78

Prof. Kwesi Botchwey, a former finance minister for Ghana, has passed away.

He served as finance minister for the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) (1982 to 1991) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during their respective constitutional periods (1992 to 1995).

According to reports, Prof. Kwesi Botchway passed away at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was receiving medical attention.

The Presbyterian Boys Senior Secondary School produced Kwesi Botchway.

Dr Botchwey graduated with a PhD from the University of Michigan Law School, an LL.M. from Yale Law School, and an LL.B. from the University of Ghana.

Professor Kwesi Botchwey held academic positions at the Universities of Ghana, Dar es Salaam, and Zambia. In addition, Dr Botchwey served as a World Bank advisor for the 1997 World Development Report.

He also served as the Chairman of the IMF's Group of Independent Experts, which carried out the first-ever external assessment of the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility. 

He also served as a consultant for the European Centre for Development Policy Management and the UNDP's UN Special Initiative on Africa (ECDPM).
