Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has expressed his pleasure with the development of the work being done to renovate and modernize the Maternity and Children's block of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
As part of his four-day working tour to the Ashanti region, the President visited the project on Monday, October 17, 2022, and was informed that the old structure had been completely demolished and that the project was currently 60 per cent complete.
You may recall that on Friday, May 15, 2020, the President cut the first sod for the teaching hospital's Maternity and Children's ward, which had been abandoned for more than 40 years.
Prior to that, on November 6, 2019, the Akufo-Addo administration, through the Ministry of Health, hired Contracta Construction UK Limited to design, carry out, and complete the work, as well as to fix any flaws. This work included remodelling and finishing shell spaces for the building structure that was already there.
The Government then decided to modify the scope of work in November 2020 to include the complete demolition of the old existing structure as well as a redesign, construction, and full equipping of the new and modern mother and child health facility. This decision was made in response to the Contractor's structural integrity report for the existing building structure.
A 3-year maintenance program for medical equipment with training and technical support, the purchase of consumables for use in both medicine and non-medicine, and the supply of necessary human resource training, technical support, and mentorship programs are also included in the new contract.
The new design has eight floors, 22 consulting rooms, three group consulting rooms, two adult emergency rooms, two pediatric emergency rooms, three auditoriums (with 45, 43, and 145 seats), five seminar rooms (each with 14 seats), and 506 beds with the capacity to hold 199 pediatric cots, 136 pediatric beds, 19 birthing beds, and 152 adult beds.
The block will also have a pharmacy, dispensary, laboratory, seven general theatres, an obstetrics theatre, and ancillary buildings.
When finished, it will have a high-dependency unit, an intensive care unit, isolation rooms, student lecture halls, and the ability to cater to staff, patients, and students.
The Station Basic School classroom block at the UDDARA Barracks is now being rebuilt as a result of the increased work and is expected to be finished in January 2023.
