Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Director for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has disclosed that the NDC's next administration will look into and prosecute several NPP members.
They are Charles Bissiw, a prominent NPP member, Ekow Ewusi, the NPP's first vice chairman in the Central Region, and Bernard Antwi Bosiako, also known as Wontumi, the party's chairman for the Ashanti region.
All of these people, according to the NDC, are actively involved in unlawful mining.
Speaking with the media, he said there is sufficient evidence to bring charges against and imprison the trio for their involvement in illegal mining, which is harming agriculture, water bodies, and forest reserves.
In an interview with the media on Thursday, October 6, 2022, Sammy Gyamfi emphasized that if the NDC in power does not bring charges against chairman Wontumi and others to discourage others from engaging in illegal mining, it will be the saddest day of his life.
The saddest day in my life will be the day NDC fails to prosecute chairman Wontumi, Ekow Awusi and Charles Bissiw for engaging in mining without a permit.
We have enough visual evidence to prosecute these people and all the key members of the NPP who are actively engaged in the illegal menace, he reiterated.
Sammy Gyamfi referred to President Akufo-reaffirmed Addo's commitment to combating galamsey as a fantasy, a con, and a lost battle.
He said that the government's record in the struggle against illicit mining is a complete failure.
Mr Gyamfi clarified that while the NDC is not against mining overall, it is opposed to mining in water bodies and expects the government to take harsh action against anyone participating in such unlawful operations.
