According to a news release from the archdiocese, three retired priests have been advised to abstain from ministry as the archdiocese of Chicago looks into claims of sexual abuse of minors from over 50 years ago.

According to a press statement, the Independent Review Board of the archdiocese is looking into the charges made against the Revs. John J. Rudnik, 87, James E. Flynn, 80, and John W. Clemens, 75.

One accusation against each of the retired priests dates back over 50 years. The clergymen are all assisting the investigation.

We take every allegation seriously and follow the policies and procedures we have had in place for decades. Only by conducting an impartial and thorough investigation, can we fulfil our promise to protect the young people in our care and, if the results warrant, restore the good name of one so accused, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, said.

According to the press statement, resources from the Archdiocese Victim Assistance Ministry were made available to the individuals who made the complaints.

The parishes where the priests ministered and the authorities were also informed.

The archbishop stated that when the inquiry is finished, the findings would be made public.
