7 Players Who Are Likely To Lose Their Place In The Black Stars Squad Against Nigeria

Ghana Black Stars

The West African giants will take on their bitterest rivals in the final round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

Black Stars interim head coach Otto Addo is expected to name his squad to face Nigeria in the final round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the coming days.

Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen has already assembled a terror squad to face the four-time AFCON winners.

The all-important clash at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium is just 17 days away and Addo is probably fine-tuning his squad with his technical team ahead of the public announcement.

Ghana Sports Online predicts which players from the 2021 AFCON squad are likely to lose their places in the squad.

Richmond Boakye-Yiadom – Beitar Jerusalem

The forward played just 35 of the available 270 minutes at the tournament despite talking up his qualities and suggesting he could emulate the legendary Asamoah Gyan, he failed to make any meaningful impact at the AFCON and it is highly likely that Otto Addo will drop him from the squad. Since returning from the AFCON, he has started just 1 out of Beitar Jerusalem’s last 7 games. He has scored two goals though.

Philomon Baffour – Rio Ave FC U23

After earning several call-ups the youngster had failed to make an appearance for the Black Stars. He recently signed for Rio Ave in Portugal but he is yet to make a senior appearance. Any call-up for the right-back at this point won’t make sense anymore.

Lawrence Ati-Zigi – St. Gallen

With the forms of Richard Attah and Danlad Ibrahim in the Ghana Premier League, Ati-Zigi’s spell with the Black Stars must come to an end at least for the main time. After scores of opportunities, the 25-year-old has failed to convince anyone of his qualities. This is the time for other goalkeepers to be given the chance.

Benjamin Tetteh – Yeni Malatyspor

Despite enjoying a bright start to his Ghana career on 9 October 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe, the 24-year-old failed to impress at the AFCON which saw him play just 6 out of the available 270 minutes. He even received a red card in the game against Gabon.

David Abagna Sanda – Real Tamale United

Zero impact with the Black Stars since his form in the Ghana Premier League earned him a spot in the team for the tournament in Cameroon. Out of form, the youngster is likely to miss out on the squad for the clash against Nigeria.

Maxwell Abbey Quaye – Great Olympics

Same fate with David Abagna as he also failed to make an impact with the team. Post-AFCON, he hasn’t scored in 4 starts for the Wonder Club.

Abdul Mumin – Vitória de Guimarães

The defender earned his debut call-up for the Black Stars but failed to depose Daniel Amartey, Alexander Djiku, and Jonathan Mensah. He was clearly regarded as a fourth-choice centre. Hearts of Oak defender Mohammed Alhassan could be an option for him.
