Road accident is one of the major problems Ghanaians and Africa as a whole are facing.

Every year road accidents claim the lives of so many Ghanaians and this year has not been an exception.

The most populated region in Ghana, Ashanti Region has recorded 367 death caused by road accidents in the last seven months.

According to the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the 367 people who were killed in road accidents in the region involves 66 females and 291 males.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Pure FM, Superintendent Emmanuel Aduboahen revealed that these accidents also rendered 2,224 people injured.

He also revealed that 2,135 road accidents were recorded between January and July this year which involves 1,589 commercial vehicles, 1,284 private cars and 697 motorbikes and tricycles.

Superintendent Emmanuel Aduboahen outlined some of the difficulties the MTTD is facing.

According to him, digitization in the systems is one of the major difficulties hindering the effectiveness of their work.

There is what we call institutional coordination; a police officer can make an arrest and seize a driver's license, the driver will then go to another station for an extract that he has misplaced his license meanwhile it is not missing. Instead of the driver facing the law, he will rather find his way out of the hook. In case the driver goes to DVLA for a new license, because DVLA does not have any mechanism to check whether his license has been seized, they will then replace it for him, he said.
