Ministry Announces The Outbreak Of Bird Flu In Some Parts Of Ghana

Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced the outbreak of the deadly Avian Influenza disease in Ghana.

The disease which is popularly referred to as Bird Flu is confirmed to be identified in some regions in Ghana including the Greater Accra region, Central region and Volta region.


In order to curb the spread of the disease, the Ministry has imposed a strict ban on the importation of poultry and its related products from foreign countries especially countries where the disease has been confirmed.

The Ministry has also banned the movement of poultry and poultry products internally mainly within and from regions cases of the disease has been recorded.


Movement of poultry and poultry products from unaffected areas will need strict inspection and issuance of permits by the Ministry.

According to a statement signed on behalf of the Minister, Dr Patrick Ablakeh (Director, Veterinary Services Directorate), it is calling for public alert and vigilance.


The statement advised Ghanaians to hastily report any unusual death of poultry or birds to the nearest veterinary office.

It also warns Ghanaian citizens to avoid handling dead poultry and poultry products with their bare hands and also develop the habit of eating only well-cooked poultry meats and products.

The statement, therefore, urged the general public to get in touch with Dr Abakeh on 020-8240734 for further information.


Bird Flu was first discovered in 1997 and has caused the death of about 60% of those infected.

The virus that causes the disease is currently not known to spread through human-to-human contact.
