The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has announced the killing of some 1,500 birds on a farm in the Ketu South Municipality.
This initiative is carried on to help curb the spread of bird flu disease in the country.
On 4th July 2021, An animal rearing business situated in the Gamadza community which goes by the name Avery Farm recorded a change in the health of some of their animals and after some tests, it was clear the farm was infected with avian influenza.
MOFA after an assessment on the farm concluded the killing and burying of birds in the farm.
In addition, eggs and feeds as well as hundreds of pigs and rabbits are to be destroyed.
According to Dr Patrick Akandi the Regional Veterinary Officer, human samples have been collected and sent to the Noguchi Medical Research Centre for testing.
Volta Region alone is known to have 300 registered poultry farms with the largest having about 30,000 birds.
