In a remarkable display of unity transcending borders and distances, a groundbreaking project dubbed 'The Portal' has been unveiled simultaneously in Dublin and New York City, connecting people over 3,000 miles apart in real-time interaction.

The brainchild of Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, 'The Portal' is more than just a sculpture; it's a virtual bridge, forming a 24/7 connection between the two vibrant cities. Located in front of iconic landmarks – the Flatiron Building in New York and Dublin's GPO and the Spire – these portals serve as gateways for cultural exchange and human connection.

Crowds gathered on May 8th as 'The Portal' was activated, with enthusiastic welcomes exchanged between Dubliners and New Yorkers through vibrant signs and heartfelt greetings. This innovative initiative aims to foster a sense of global interconnectedness, allowing individuals to meet beyond geographical boundaries and cultural differences.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí De Róiste, emphasized the inclusive nature of the project, highlighting its role in bringing people together from diverse backgrounds. The portal, he announced, will also extend its reach to other locations starting in July, further enhancing its impact on global communication.

Scheduled programming, including cultural performances and celebrations for events like New York Design Week, will be shared between the two cities in the months to come. This exchange promises to enrich the cultural fabric of both Dublin and New York, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.

The Simons Foundation, in collaboration with various partners including portals.org and the EU Capital of Smart Tourism, played a pivotal role in bringing 'The Portal' to life. David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation, emphasized the significance of public spaces in amplifying the collective voice of cities, reaffirming the commitment to integrating science and technology into public discourse.

The journey of 'The Portal' began in 2016 when Benediktas Gylys was inspired by a spiritual experience to create a platform for transcending polarizing ideas and facilitating cross-cultural communication. With the support of VilniusTech University and funding from Gylys himself, the first two portals were established in Vilnius and Lublin in May 2021.
