In a momentous recognition of his exemplary leadership, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was bestowed with the Medal of Merit for Leadership by the Africa Bar Association (ABA).

The prestigious award was presented during the ABA's 2023 Annual Conference in Pretoria, South Africa.

Described in a citation as a "pan-Africanist, anti-corruption crusader, and a rare democratic leader," President Akufo-Addo's dedication to good governance and his enduring contributions to the African continent were lauded.

The citation praised him as a true African Statesman, whose legacy is destined to stand the test of time and inspire future generations of leaders.

The ABA's President, Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, handed over the award to President Akufo-Addo, who expressed gratitude and acknowledged the vital role of the legal profession in African societies.

He noted the historical significance of lawyers' involvement in the fight for liberation from colonialism, emphasizing the need for Africa to shape its own narrative.

Drawing attention to Africa's untapped potential, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of intra-African trade and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He urged unity among African nations, asserting that the AfCFTA, which commenced trading on January 1, 2021, holds the key to unlocking substantial economic growth.

The President articulated the potential of Africa's collective strength, with its population of 1.3 billion and a combined GDP of three trillion USD.

He stressed that the AfCFTA could elevate intra-African trade by $35 billion and significantly reduce external imports, offering growth opportunities for small businesses and the potential to uplift millions from poverty.

However, President Akufo-Addo cautioned that the benefits of AfCFTA would be hampered by instability and insecurity.

He highlighted the ongoing terrorist insurgency affecting West African nations and emphasized the importance of ensuring peace and stability for sustainable economic development.

Additionally, he called for a commitment to democratic governance and the rejection of unconstitutional changes in government.

Concluding his address, President Akufo-Addo underscored the AfCFTA's role in Africa's industrialization and transformation.

He urged governments and businesses to exhibit bold leadership in realizing the potential of this game-changing initiative.
