At least 20 people have tragically lost their lives as Beijing and the surrounding province of Hebei experienced an unprecedented deluge of rainfall, causing widespread devastation and displacement.
Chinese state media reported 11 deaths in Beijing on Tuesday, with an additional nine victims in Hebei.
The extreme rainfall was a consequence of the tropical storm Doksuri, which battered the coastal province of Fujian as a typhoon before weakening into a tropical storm on its way inland.
The weather bureau of the Chinese capital issued the highest rain warning level since Saturday evening and urged the public to stay indoors.
Despite this warning, torrential rains have continued unabated, transforming streets into raging rivers carrying masses of mud and sweeping away parked cars.
The impact on the rural outskirts of Beijing was particularly severe, with entire communities being submerged in floodwaters.
Shocking videos emerged showing a bridge collapsing under the force of the water.
The disaster has forced authorities to evacuate more than 100,000 people to safer areas, according to reports from the Chinese People's Daily.
