Deadly Floods Wreak Havoc in North East Region: 5 Confirmed Fatalities

North East Region Flood

The North East Region of the country is grappling with the aftermath of a weeklong downpour that resulted in catastrophic floods, claiming the lives of five individuals and leaving others injured.

The impact of the floods was especially severe in parts of the East Mamprusi and West Mamprusi municipalities.

The havoc wrought by the floods included four individuals who tragically drowned in the rising waters of the East Mamprusi and West Mamprusi municipalities.

Another life was lost when a building collapsed in the Yunyoo/Nansuan District, underscoring the widespread devastation caused by the natural disaster.

The grim discovery of the deceased took place days after the torrential rains and floods had wreaked havoc in the region.

The bodies of the victims were found in drainage systems and ponds, a somber reminder of the destructive power of nature.

Confirming the tragic loss of life, John Kwaku Alhassan, the North East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), shared that the bodies had been handed over to the grieving families for proper burial.

Alhassan also revealed that NADMO was actively assessing the extent of the damage caused by the floods, with the aim of providing urgent relief to those affected.

"The situation is not too good because some of the areas are being cut off, with other buildings collapsing," Alhassan remarked, highlighting the dire situation on the ground.

He further emphasized NADMO's efforts to sensitize residents along the White Volta about the risks and encourage them to move to higher ground to avoid further tragedies.

The floods had dire consequences, as parts of the West Mamprusi and East Mamprusi municipalities were submerged after a four-hour downpour.

The town of Walewale, the West Mamprusi Municipal capital, faced isolation from the regional capital, Nalerigu, as critical infrastructure such as a bridge and a dam were washed away by the raging floods.

The inundation left countless residents homeless, and travelers found themselves stranded due to inaccessible roads.

The affected communities, including Gaagbini, Tinguri, Mimima, Kuruguduri, Walewale, Nalerigu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi, bore the brunt of the disaster.

Houses, farmlands, livestock, and other property were swept away, leaving behind a trail of devastation.
