Kenyan Soldier Shoots And Kill Politician He Was Guarding

colonel Charles Okello Engola

A government minister who was under the guard of a Ugandan national army member was shot and killed.

The deputy minister for gender and labour, retired colonel Charles Okello Engola, was shot on Tuesday morning at his house.

It is still unclear if the soldier and Col. Engola had a disagreement.

The unnamed soldier then shot himself in the head to end his life too.

Some eyewitnesses claimed the soldier walked around the neighbourhood shooting in the air before turning the gun on himself.

Initial indications indicate that several individuals may be hurt, and footage posted on social media showed shocked locals assembling in the area.

Senior government figure Col. Engola has previously held the position of deputy defence minister.

Col. Engola's passing was announced by the Speaker of the Ugandan parliament in a brief statement read aloud during the morning session.

"This morning I received the sad news that Hon Engola has been shot by his bodyguard and after, shot himself. May his soul rest in peace. That was God's plan. We can't change anything," Anita Among told MPs on Tuesday.
