India deadly gas leak

A gas leak in northern India has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including women and children.

On Sunday, April 30, the leak occurred in an industrial region of the city of Ludhiana, Punjab.

At least nine other persons, according to Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, a lawmaker from Ludhiana, had also been carried to the hospital.

She said that in order to identify the cause and origin of the leak, a team from the National Disaster Response Force and a team of specialists had been dispatched to the location.

Residents have been evacuated, and the highly populated region has been blocked off.

Although we are unable to pinpoint exactly where the leak started, the incident took place close to a milk store and a medical clinic, Ms Chhina told Reuters.

India's deadly gas leak

"People who came in the morning to buy milk fell unconscious outside."

Anjan Kumar, a local, said in a video posted on Twitter by the ANI news agency that three of the bodies had "turned blue".

Surabhi Malik, the deputy commissioner for Ludhiana, told the Press Trust of India that it was conceivable that the gas had leaked through manholes.

"We will get samples from manholes. Methane and some chemical most likely interacted with one another in manholes," she added.

Bhagwant Mann, the state's chief minister, said the leak originated at a factory and tweeted, "All possible help is being provided."
