On the basis of an alleged sexual assault of a lady at a Barcelona nightclub, a Spanish court ordered the detention of Brazilian football star Dani Alves.
Alves was arrested and brought to the Brians 1 jail, which is located outside of Barcelona. The Catalan judicial system confirmed that the accused victim filed a complaint earlier this month, and the investigation remained open as a sexual assault offence.
Following his detention and questioning by local police, Alves was taken before a magistrate in Barcelona on Friday. The public prosecutor has urged that he be held without bail until his trial. Alves' reps have yet to comment on the situation.
Liga MX, Mexico's premier soccer division, is closely monitoring the case and Alves' legal condition in collaboration with his present club, Pumas UNAM, to decide the best course of action for his participation in the league.
Pumas UNAM indicated that it will take the required procedures and impose the punishment stipulated in the athlete's employment contract.
Alves has had a good career, having played with Barcelona from 2008 to 2016 and returned to the La Liga squad for a brief stint in 2021-22. He has also played for the Brazilian national team since 2006, making 126 appearances and scored 8 goals.
Alves previously denied any wrongdoing in an interview with Antena 3 TV, claiming that he was in the club with others and that his behaviour was normal.
"I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone’s space,” he said. “I don’t know who this lady is… How could I do that to a woman? No."
