Alhaji Asumah Banda, a business mogul and one of Ghana's first multimillionaires, has responded to his first wife's divorce petition through his attorneys, telling the court that based on his experience with her, his first wife Cassandra Banda may not wish him well.
Cassandra Banda filed a divorce suit in London against Alhaji Asumah Banda.
Cassandra stated in her writ that her husband had "ran away from their marital home," among other reasons she wanted the marriage dissolved with payment for her.
In a response to the petition obtained through his attorneys, Alhaji Banda confessed that he had a restroom accident in 2015 or thereabouts.
While living with Cassandra at their married house, Alhaji Asumah Banda said he tripped and fell hard in a restroom.
Alhaji Banda's attorneys claimed that Cassandra, who was close and observed the accident, refused [or was unable to] instantly run to their client's help.
Cassandra was "peeping" through the bathroom glass enclosures, according to the attorneys, to observe if their client "Alhaji Banda" was moving or immovable.
According to court documents, Cassandra went to the restroom to "kick" their client after waiting many minutes and seeing no movement. Lawyers think the motive for the alleged action was to confirm "whether our client was dead or alive".
Only when she discovered Alhaji Banda was still breathing and alive did she ask for aid so that Alhaji Banda might receive essential medical attention.
Following his partial recuperation, Court documents show that Alhaji chose to live with his second wife, Edwina Baaba Coussey Banda, whom he had split from between 2006 and 2015 due to her claimed adultery.
Since then, Alhaji Asumah Banda has lived with Edwina Baaba Coussey Banda, his second wife, whose marriage to Alhaji the first wife Cassandra claims she does not acknowledge.
Cassandra Banda, who had five children with Alhaji Asumah Banda compared to Edwina Baaba's two, asks the court to award her more than 60% of the assets and properties obtained during their marriage.
Alhaji was legally married to Cassandra in a London jurisdiction in 1974 before meeting and marrying Edwina Baaba in Accra, according to Cassandra, thus his second marriage is legally invalid.
Cassandra Banda further accuses Edwina of being one of Alhaji's "many philandering companions" whom he chose to "marry".
