Parts Of Accra Hit By Magnitude 4.0 Earth Tremor

On Monday morning, a minor earth tremor with a magnitude of 4.0 occurred in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The epicentre was about 10 kilometres from Gbawe in the western part of Accra.

The event, which occurred on December 12, 2022, at 11:53 a.m. local time, happened three more times in a span of five hours.

The first happened at 6:53 am, likewise in the western part of Accra, the second at 10 am in the same locations, and the third at 11:53 am, ten kilometres from Gbawe.

The seismic activity had a magnitude of 4.0, making it one of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded in Ghana, according to the Android Earthquake Alerts System.

The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GSSA) stated in its official report on the tremor that a team of specialists had been sent to the site to gather data.

Isaac Nwinbelle, the director of the GGSA, revealed that a team of specialists had been sent to Weija to the earthquake monitoring station there in order to gather information on the most recent tremor.

The Graphic Road neighbourhood in Accra was among the areas to feel the tremor.

Many commercial operations take place in Accra's Central Business District (CBD), particularly near the Bank of Ghana area. According to several eyewitnesses, some individuals were observed attempting to walk away from buildings towards safety in this area.
