There was chaos in the Yonen village, Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River after the mother of the infant, Mrs Blessing Eno, killed the 11-month-old boy and said she was instructed to do so by a "Spirit."
Many people in the community are perplexed by the unfortunate tragedy that happened on Tuesday since the events leading up to the heinous deed continue to be peculiar.
The mother of two, who may have schizophrenia, allegedly grabbed a matchet and chopped off the baby's head while screaming that the infant was bothering her and that a ghost had told her to kill the boy.
An eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous said that her eight-year-old son was the one who came across his brother's decapitated body, and a mother who was covered in blood was the one who sounded the alarm that brought neighbours to the site of the murder.
However, the police's prompt action in taking the woman into protective custody and transporting her outside of Ugep prevented an angry crowd from killing the woman there.
In the meantime, HRM Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr LGA, has expressed dismay at the terrible occurrence and called for calm.
The Monarch also gave the populace assurances that the police would handle the situation skillfully and logically.
