The Catholic Diocese of Jasikan in the Oti Region has issued a direct statement outlining the reasons why its leadership and constituents reject mineral resource extraction in the area.
Despite the advantages of mining, according to a statement from the Catholics of Jasikan issued by the Most Rev. Gabriel A. A. Mante, the local population will not eventually gain from it.
As a result, they reject mining in the area and are urging the government to reevaluate whatever agreements it may have made with businesses or people regarding the exploitation of natural resources as they do not agree with it.
The statement emphasized how mining in other regions has not fueled growth but has instead left people, particularly women and children, destitute and stressed.
"We call upon all government officials to within these two regions to reexamine whatever agreement they may have reached with companies…" the statement said.
