The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is still striving to find a technological solution to the issue it was having with the company's PNS and E-cash metering systems when it came to vending for prepaid customers.
Since Tuesday, September 27, 2022, when the systems went offline, they have been down for four days.
Although there is electricity available, many prepaid system users are unable to top up their credits in order to connect to power, forcing them to resort to sleeping in the dark.
According to information obtained from the ECG, their systems have been hacked by external sources and are now in charge of the source codes and refusing to provide them to the ECG.
Except for a series of announcements warning the public about the technical difficulties it was having with the smooth operation of the prepaid system and reassuring customers that it was "assiduously working to rectify the anomaly," ECG has not made any statements regarding the alleged cyber-attack.
According to a source, the ECG has requested assistance in order to help fix the situation and is currently working on it.
The ECG is on-site working with representatives from National Security and the Cyber Security Authority to repair the systems.
In addition, the ECG is presently conducting a thorough investigation of its system to determine what led to the technical malfunction that has impacted service for many of its prepaid customers across the nation.
According to Graphic Online, the Cyber Security Authority and the Department of National Security are working together to figure out how the system may have malfunctioned and how to prevent it from happening again in the future.
The Cyber Security Authority is providing help since there is a strong suspicion that the system has been compromised.
As part of a series of statements the ECG has been issuing since Wednesday, the firm claimed in a third release on Friday night (September 30, 2022) that owing to the anomaly, "the company would extend its working hours at all district offices this weekend as follows:
Saturday, 1st October 2022 – 9.00am – 4.00pm
Sunday, 2nd October 2022 – 9.00am – 4.00pm
