With effect from November 2022, the Russian government has increased the number of scholarships available to students from Ghana from 75 to 110.
All students who are eligible for the grant may enrol in engineering and medical programs at Russian universities.
The statement was made by Mr Dmitry Suslov, the Russian ambassador to Ghana, during a courtesy visit to Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the minister of education.
During the visit, topics pertaining to the advancement of education in the two nations were discussed.
Mr Dmitry clarified that the increase was in response to a recent request made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He promised the people that Russia was ready to assist it in its effort to use education to develop the economy of the country.
He spoke of intentions to expand the nation's network of Russian language teaching and learning facilities to boost access to the language.
According to the Russian Ambassador, expanding the number of language learning facilities in Ghana would make it easier for more Ghanaians to come to Russia and engage in a variety of activities, which would significantly advance the socioeconomic progress of the nation.
Although the University of Ghana's Faculty of Languages already teaches the Russian language, Mr Dmitry claimed that many people who were not students, particularly businessmen and women among others, were unable to study the Russian language, necessitating the establishment of additional centres off the campus.
According to the ambassador, opening up access to the Russian language in Ghana would cease the practice of Ghanaian students spending their first year of study abroad in Russia learning the language before beginning their program in their second year.
Dr Adutwum praised the Russian government for its assistance, saying it would greatly improve bilateral ties between the two nations.
He promised that the nation will work with Russia to further the advancement of the two countries.
The Education Minister stated that expanding the number of Ghanaian scholarships in Russia would significantly assist in the growth of the nation since the students might return home after completing their studies and contribute to its advancement.
