The 60-bed Asante Akim Municipal Hospital in Konongo in the Ashanti Region was inaugurated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday.
The $35.86 million hospital was built as part of the Ghana Hospital Project, which was started by the Kufour government in 2008.
Administration, outpatient department (OPD), physiotherapy, pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, surgery suite (operation dep. ), laundry, mortuary, medical waste department, general shops, ten (10) staff housing units, and a small market are among the departments contained at the facility.
Additionally, it is outfitted with cutting-edge medical devices including x-ray machines, ultrasound devices, a fully functional operating room, medical gases, and patient monitors. Additionally, it has a power plant, a water treatment facility, a central air conditioning system, and a facility for the anaerobic treatment of sewage.
President Akufo-Addo officially opened the hospital as part of his four-day working tour to the Ashanti Region, and he reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding access to vital and high-quality healthcare services.
He said that his government will make sure Ghana achieves universal health coverage by providing the required facilities, tools, and logistics, including the use of the right technologies.
"This Hospital has been long awaited in Konongo, and it is good that today, the demand for a Municipal Hospital of quality has been realised. Residents and surrounding health facilities will now gain access to improved healthcare," he said.
The president has inaugurated six such facilities under the "Ghana Hospital Project," the most recent of which is the Konongo Municipal Hospital.
The "Ghana Hospital Project" will cost US$339 million and will comprise the design, building, and equipping of one military hospital, two regional hospitals, and six district hospitals in Ghana. It fits with the overarching goal of creating the necessary infrastructure for Ghanaians to get quality healthcare.
Other hospitals being built under the contract include the 500-bed Military Hospital, run by the Ministry of Defense, at Afari, also in the Ashanti Region, and the 60-bed Municipal Hospital at Salaga in the East Gonja Municipality. The 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital is located at Sewua in the Bosomtwe District.
Before the end of 2023, they should all be put into service.
