Will Smith's first film following the Oscars Slap is scheduled for release in December.
The historical drama "Emancipation," starring actor Will Smith for the first time since he slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards, will hit theatres in December, making it eligible for next year's Oscars.
Apple Inc. (AAPL.O), the distributor, revealed the timing in a statement and unveiled a trailer on Monday.
Before Smith assaulted Rock on stage in February, "Emancipation," a movie about a man who flees slavery, was in the filming stages. However, the movie's release date had not yet been determined.
Smith is not allowed to attend the Oscars for ten years, although he can still be nominated and win.
The actor has publicly apologized for slapping Chris Rock over a joke about the looks of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
A little over an hour later, Smith won the best actor for his portrayal of "King Richard," the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.
According to Apple, "Emancipation" will screen exclusively in cinemas for one week beginning on December 2 and stream for the first time on Apple TV+ on December 9.
The real-life account of "Whipped Peter," a man whose significant scars from being whipped as a slave was documented in Harper's Weekly in 1863, served as the basis for the film.
