Businessman and United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Akwasi Addae Odike thinks the Chinese are deliberately trying to harm Ghana's lands in order to eliminate cocoa, the nation's main export.
He asserts that the Chinese have plans to damage the foundation of the Ghanaian economy in order for them to overtake it as the world's top producer of cocoa and are thus trying to become its primary exporter.
In light of this, Odike said that the Chinese travel to Ghana in order to participate in illicit mining by acquiring and destroying cocoa fields.
"The Chinese have a plan to become world leaders in cocoa production so they have sent out their people to come and destroy our land so that we cannot produce cocoa anymore. They bring the cyanide which destroys our water bodies and in turn also destroys the quality of cocoa we produce", he said.
Now the people who used to buy our cocoa are rejecting it because the Chines have told them that we have cyanide in our cocoa now. It’s a strategy by the Chinese. If I was a President, I won’t allow these Chinese to come into Ghana", he continued.
"They want to colonize Ghana economically but our elders don’t see it like that. They bring them money and they give out their lands to destroy it. Last year Ghana lost $16 billion worth of gold which was smuggled out of the shores of this country. Meanwhile, we are looking for 2&3 billion from IMF. Our chiefs should have an introspection. If their forefathers left their lands in this state, will they have agreed to become Chiefs after they have died? Mining does not bring anything to the people. The places where mining takes place just suffer," he said.
