Transport 30% Increment Is A Proposed One; It’s Not Finalized Yet – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has refuted accusations that transportation costs have increased by 30%.

The Union claims that the aforementioned percentage is a planned increase that is pending government approval.

The GPRTU said on Wednesday that it will be raising transportation costs by 30% as of September 21.

Samuel Amoah, a member of the GPRTU's communication team, clarified on Joy FM's Newsnite that the union cannot raise transportation prices without contacting the government.

Informing the Transport Ministry of an impending upward adjustment was the purpose of the communiqué.

And when that has been done, according to Mr Amoah, the Union will work with the Ministry to decide how much the transit fares should be revised.

"The 30% increase is now only a proposal; before we formally announce it, we'll meet with the Transport Ministry to discuss it.

So perhaps they will agree or there will be some concessions, he added in the interview on Wednesday.

The recent increases in the cost of petroleum products in the nation had already been characterized as worrying by GPRTU.

Starting on September 1, 2022, the cost of gasoline and diesel at the local gas stations increased by around 5.4%, with average prices for each being 11.55 and 14.50, respectively.

At the start of the year, the average price for gasoline and diesel per litre was 6.9 and 7.0, respectively.
