The Lower Manya Constituency Member of Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Teye Larbi, and 15 other people have received a writ of summons from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for allegedly consuming electricity unlawfully.
The illegalities were discovered during normal inspections of the company's meters at Lorlonyo, Kpong, and Odumase in its Krobo District, according to Ms Sakyiwaa Mensah, ECG Tema Regional Public Relations Officer.
The writ of summons was given to the MP's caretaker who was there after the unlawful electricity was disconnected, Ms Mensah said, even though the MP wasn't home at the time of the visit by a team of engineers from the ECG and the Military.
She stated that the MP had previously reported two of the four meters missing from his compound, for which he had provided a police report as asked by ECG, and that the matter was still being investigated internally.
According to the current state of affairs, the apartments without meters are supposed to have been disconnected.
However, she explained, "On our monitoring, we realized that those two apartments have power, and upon further investigations on the field, we realized that the two have been connected from a third meter, on his premises."
ECG, she said, viewed this connection as unlawful, so it removed the electricity to the three flats and anticipated that they would be unoccupied.
Ms Mensah further disclosed that the other neighbourhood residents who participated in the illicit activities fled their houses after they learned that ECG was conducting surveillance and had already confronted others for doing so.
According to the ECG Tema PRO, the legislation granted ECG the authority to pursue cases of unlawful connections, which might result in a fine or a jail sentence. She asked consumers to follow the law and refrain from making illegal power connections.
Nobody is above the law, thus we implore all consumers to refrain from illicit relationships as much as possible. She said, "Let us all comply to and with the rules of the nation, so we are not found wanting.
