A Liberian national has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment by an Accra High Court after she was caught trying to smuggle cocaine from the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Bangkok, Thailand.
Her Ladyship Justice Mary Ekua Yanzuh the judge who presided over the case on Wednesday, August 31, also fined the convict Ms Margaret Wolo Maikplay 10,000 penalty units in default to serve three years additional term.
Ms Margaret Wolo Maikplay was charged with attempted exportation and possession of narcotic drugs without a Minister of Health licence, which is a violation of sections 36 and 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), correspondingly
She pleaded guilty on her own accord to each count concurrently upon questioning by the presiding judge.
Ms Wolo Maikplay Margaret was arrested by Narcotics Control Commission(NACOC) officers on the 14th of May, 2022, while making a transit at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) from Monrovia to Bangkok-Thailand with Qatar Airways.
The narcotic commission officials at KIA conducted a physical search on her after receiving a tip from a sister security agency and a total of 30 pellets containing cocaine weighing 277.2101grams were retrieved under her breast and private part.
