A 41-year-old lady and her three children have perished in a trench that has been dug in the Keta Lagoon in Laklevikope, close to Aflao, in the Ketu South Municipality.
The event allegedly occurred on Saturday as Madam Yawa Apenu, her children Bridget Amewu, 14, and Daddy Amewu, 10, as well as a third kid, Sitsofe Ahiawor, 8, who resided with the family, were out fishing.
The widower who was said to be on the trip, Mr Atitso Amewu, was able to swim to safety.
According to several locals who talked with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Seven Seas Salt Limited, which had an incomplete dike on its concessions nearby, may have excavated the hole.
The business, though, refuted the assertion.
According to reports, two persons apparently perished while trying to fish near that section of the lagoon in July.
Following the occurrence, Mr. Victor Ayaku, the local Assemblyman, told the GNA in an interview:
"There's no delineation or sort of protection surrounding the dykes, and it's almost like a death trap for unwary neighbours who might wish to go fishing in the lagoon," a local said.
However, Mr. Adams Mensah, the company's public relations officer, said that Seven Seas Salt Limited was not at fault for the catastrophe on Saturday.
He said that the fish pond belonged to a person who was unknown to the Company and that it was located beyond the company's concession.
He stated the mining business was prepared to assist the family of the dead and expressed his sorrow over the loss of life.
In order to seek to stop such preventable fatalities, he advocated cooperation between them and stakeholders, particularly the assembly members in the areas where the Company held concessions.
Although the Company has built warning signs about hazards, which it would begin placing on its concessions on Monday to keep people and fishers away from deep pit regions, Mr Mensah said the Company would also conduct education programs.
He claimed that because some people had built fish ponds in the lagoon, people could use sticks to measure the level of the water when fishing in order to prevent mishaps.
In the meanwhile, a police source who verified the occurrence to the GNA said the bodies had been taken to the morgue and a meeting had been planned with the deceased's family to assist with the inquiry.
