Projects in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Region in recent times has received a couple of developmental projects.

The projects that are and were spearheaded by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, President Nana Akufo Addo and former President John Dramani Mahama are located in various areas of the region including Kumasi.

Below are some ongoing and semi-completed developmental projects in the region.

1. Garden City Mall.

Kumasi already has some nice and amazing shopping malls like the Kumasi City Mall, Jubilee Mall, China Mall and the likes. The Garden City Mall which is under construction is set to beat all of them. The mall which is estimated to have cost $48 million is located at Suame Roundabout in Kumasi. The three-storey shopping mall with the size of 20,000 square meters is sited on a 14-acre land at the Suame Roundabout. Inside the mall, there will be an ultra-modern clinic, restaurants, banks, cinema hall, pharmacy and beauty shop. The project which started in 2017 was initiated by the Methodist Church, Ghana.

2. Kumasi International Airport.

One of the Ashanti Region's most anticipated projects is the Kumasi International Airport. The airport after completion is going to be the second international airport in Ghana. The Airport which is located in the centre of the city will be capable of handling more than one million passengers a year. The length of its runway is 2,300 meters enabling the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 737-800. The project which is in the hands of Messrs Contracta Construction UK Limited is said to have cost €124.9 million.

3. Boankra Inland Port.

This very important infrastructure would link the ports of Tema and Takoradi to the inner parts of the country and the landlocked countries of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. This project can be located in Boankra in the Ashanti Region. It covers an area of 413 acres. The port is said to have cost US$330 million. Boankra Inland Port will have an inland clearance depot, customs bonded and unbonded estates, commercial areas such as banks, offices and trading facilities, vehicle parking areas, light industrial areas, and an administration complex.

4. Ashanti Regional Hospital.

The Ashanti Regional Hospital is located at Sewia in the Bosomtwe District. The hospital is a 250-bed infrastructure. This hospital will have ultra-modern wards, the Outpatients Department, an administration block, ancillary facilities including a water plant, a sewerage treatment plant, a medical waste treatment system. It will also have 20-unit staff accommodation, a 150-car park, an ambulance station, housing for lactating mothers, power plants, a mortuary, among others. The 12,500 square-metre facility will also have 10 theatres and dental, orthopaedic, urology and andrology specialist clinic.

5. Phase 2 Of The Kumasi Kejetia Central Market.

Work on the Kumasi Kejetia Central Market is ongoing. The market after completion will have 6,500 market spaces, 5,400 cold stores, 800 kiosks, 50 restaurants, 210 stalls for fishmongers and butchers, 40 livestock stalls, a police station, fire station, post office and a hospital. The mega project estimated to cost US$278 million, is being constructed by Messrs Contracta Construction Company of the United Kingdom (UK) while the Bank of Germany is the financier. It covers a total construction area of over 172,197 square meters, a total leasable area of 52,701 square meters and 44,594 square meters of parking spots for cars and vans.

6. Kumasi Military Hospital.

The Kumasi Military Hospital is located in Afari in Kumasi. The 500-bed hospital will have 50 medical and non-medical buildings, 15 operating theatres, 2 endoscopy operating rooms, 9 delivery rooms, a 153-body capacity mortuary, 64 staff housing units, a medical gas plant for the production of the medical gases, a sterilisation department and a helipad. This project is said to have US$180 million. It is situated on 260,000 square metres of land in Afari.

7. Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plants Limited.

The Kumasi Compost and recycling Plants Limited is one of the biggest sanitation projects in West Africa. This ultra-modern facility is managed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited. The project will work on a maximum of 1,200 tonnes of waste a day with an employment drive of 500 people for the start. This factory is expected to process 1,200 tonnes of waste per day. It is located at Essereso-Adagya in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti region. The project covers an area of 150 acres with a solid waste plant, a restaurant, a clinic, a cafeteria, lecture halls, an administration block, a conference hall and other auxiliary facilities.

8. Kumasi International Conference Centre.

The Ashanti Region has finally gotten its first international conference centre in Kumasi. The US$20 million multi-purpose edifice will help boost tourism, creative arts and economic growth in Kumasi and the region as a whole. It will have an exhibition hall, events centres, deluxe shops, office complex, luxury hotels, hi-tech gym, theme part, designer eatery, mini zoo, cosmetic clinic, automated car park and executive business suites. Upon completion, the theatre would have 2,000 seats in the main auditorium, with a hall for 600 seats to meet specially-tailored meetings.

9. Obuasi Trauma and Accident Hospital.

The Obuasi Trauma and Accident Hospital is a 100-bed hospital at Bidiem in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. The hospital after completion will be equipped with three (3) operating theatres, recovery rooms, resuscitation rooms, plaster room, a diagnostics centre to include a CT scan, X-ray, fluoroscopy, laboratory, a blood bank, circulation unit, physiotherapy, counselling rooms besides the accident and emergency care units. It will also have washrooms, changing rooms, a store, nurse station offices, a recovery room, a dental clinic, a canteen, a maternity facility, a laundry, a technical installation, a maintenance unit and a workshop. The project is said to have cost €55 million.

10. Appeals Court Complex Housing Projects.

The Appeals Court Complex Housing Project is located at Danyame in Kumasi. The 20 unit four-bedroom townhouses with each having a boys' quarters are estimated to cost GH₵76,575,937. It will have a six-unit three-bedroom apartment with boys' quarters each for directors and other administrative staff. The facility which is being built on a 7.5-acre land will be equipped with amenities such as a swimming pool, tennis court, clubhouse, among others.

11. Kwadaso Creative Art Senior High School.

Kwadaso Creative Art Senior High School is Ghana’s first-ever Senior High School for the Creative Arts industry. This ultra-modern facility is located at Kwadaso in Kumasi. The project when finished will include the construction of an administration block, auditorium, staff flat, residential zone, principal’s residence, vice principal’s residence, dining hall with kitchen, boys and girls dormitory, library, creative block and twelve laboratories. The girls’ dormitory is expected to take about 750 beds, whiles the boys’ dormitory takes about 500 beds. This school will admit more than 1,200 students after completion.

12. Prabon Greenfield.

Prabon Greenfield is one of the finest gated estate housing facilities in the Ashanti Region. This housing facility is popularly known as Otumfuo Estate. It has facilities like water, underground drainage and sewage system, electricity and communications, solar panels for water boilers, fully tarred roads, landscaping and a nature reserve. It also has a school, sporting facilities, a community centre, parks and a meandering river. Prabon Greenfield estate is located in Prabon in Kumasi, 30 minutes from the Kumasi Airport and just 10 minutes away from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The project is a joint venture between Asanteman and an investment company called Vital Capital Fund. It is the only estate housing in Ghana that gives you a free SUV car when you buy a house from them.

13. Kumasi to Obuasi New Standard Gauge Railway Line.

The Kumasi-Obuasi standard gauge railway line is an 83.5-kilometre railway line being constructed from Kumasi to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. The project which is estimated to costUS$48 million will help improve the transportation system between the two cities. It also forms part of the 15-km narrow gauge railway line from Sekondi to Takoradi via Kojokrom. This project consists of earthworks, culverts and bridges for drainage and other hydraulic structures, grade separation, slope protection works, fencing and access roads.

14. New Maternity Block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is meant to replace 45 years old maternity block that was never completed. This project is situated on the premises of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The hospital is estimated to cost €138.5 million. It is designed to have a 500-bed capacity. The facility will have a modern health edifice, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics units, an intensive care unit, a high dependency unit, isolation rooms and student lecture halls, with the capacity to provide catering services for staff, patients and students. It will also serve as a referral centre for twelve of the sixteen regions of the country with outpatient areas for adults and children, ten operating theatres and diagnostic rooms, fully equipped with X-Ray, ultrasound, and mammography facilities.

Other projects in the region include Tepa district hospital, Konongo district hospital, Sofoline Interchange, Kumasi Solar Taxi by Kumasi Hive, Ultra-modern College of Education in Tepa, Ejisu Besease and Nyinahin Community Multi-Purpose Sports Facility.
