ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES WITH WASSCE/SSSCE, GCE/IGCSE ‘A’ & ‘O’ LEVELS, ABCE/GBCE, MATURE AND EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATIONS

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING AN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

  1. Most first degree programmes of study are of Four (4) years duration.
  2. Minimum/General Entry Requirements.


  • WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

An applicant for admission to a degree Programme in the University must have CREDITS in the THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), and CREDITS in THREE WASSCE/SSSCE Elective Subjects or it's equivalent relevant to the chosen Programme with aggregate 24 or better (WASSCE: A1-C6/SSSCE A-D). D7, E8 & F9 ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR ADMISSION PURPOSES.

It is worth noting that the THREE CORE SUBJECTS are prerequisites for all Programmes of study at our University.

  • GENERAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (GBCE)

Applicants must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects including English Language and passes in THREE Elective Subjects including Business Mathematics.

  • GCE/IGCSE (CAMBRIDGE) ‘A’ & ‘O’LEVELS/MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE credits at the GCE/IGCSE O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics (or its approved equivalent), plus passes in at least THREE (3) subjects at the Advanced Level/Three Credits in the case of mature applicants. In addition, the applicant must fulfil the appropriate Faculty or Departmental requirements.

  • ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE)

Applicants must have passes in THREE Compulsory Subjects plus THREE (3) Optional Subjects relevant to the Programme of study.

  • INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

International Baccalaureate holders should have a minimum of grade 4 at the Higher Level (HL) in Three (3) Subjects relevant to the Programme of choice and a minimum of grade 5 in Chemistry for Health and Allied Sciences. For Engineering, at least grade 5 at the Higher Level (HL) in Mathematics. In addition, one must have a minimum of grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics at the Standard Level (SL) and at least grade C in a Science subject at the IGCSE. 

  • Applicants from French Speaking Countries must provide a minimum of one year English Proficiency Certificate.

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

A. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. AGRICULTURE

B. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Chemistry, and any TWO (2) of the following Elective Subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Biology, General Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Crop and Horticulture, Fisheries, and Forestry.

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level or equivalent qualification including English Language and Mathematics, PLUS THREE passes at the A’ Level or equivalent including Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants with a certificate in Forestry/Fisheries must have attained the age of 25 years, at the time of submitting the Application Forms, and a minimum of TWO (2) years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management, and

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,

OR

Credits in WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus THREE (3) Electives in Chemistry, and Physics or Elective Mathematics, Biology or General Agriculture. Short-listed applicants must pass an interview.

C. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

D. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. FOREST RESOURCE TECHNOLOGY

1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit Passes in THREE (3) of the following Elective Subjects: Chemistry, Biology or General Agriculture, and Physics or Mathematics.

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including Mathematics and English Language plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Physics and any one of the following: Biology, Agricultural Science and Mathematics. Applicants with Agricultural Science or Mathematics must have a credit in O’ Level Biology.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants with a certificate in Forestry/Fisheries must have attained the age of 25 years, at the time of submitting the Application Forms, and a minimum of TWO (2) years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management, and

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,

OR

Credits in WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus THREE (3) Electives in Biology or General Agriculture, Chemistry, and Physics or Elective Mathematics.

Short-listed applicants must pass an interview.

4. DIPLOMA HOLDERS

Diploma holders with Distinction from KNUST may be eligible to continue up to degree level without a break. Other diploma holders may be admitted after a minimum of TWO (2) Years post-diploma field experience. Additionally, applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O Level including English Language, Mathematics, and three (3) of the following: Chemistry and Physics, Biology or Additional General Science or General Science.

OR

Credit passes in THREE (3) of the following Electives subjects, Biology or General Agriculture, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics. Short-listed applicants must pass an interview.

E. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT

1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

i. Science Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (Science Option), must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in THREE (3) Electives: Chemistry plus either Physics or Mathematics and Biology or General Agriculture.

ii. Business Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSEC certificate (Business Option), must in addition to credits in the three core subjects (English language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in THREE (3) Electives: Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Business Mathematics and Costing or Elective Mathematics. Applicants with this combination must have a minimum of C (for SSSCE applicants) and B3 (for WASSCE Applicants) in Integrated Science.

iii. General Arts Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (General Arts Option) must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in THREE (3) Electives: Economics, Geography and Elective Mathematics. Applicants with this combination must have a minimum of C (for SSSCE applicants) and B3 (for WASSCE Applicants) in Integrated Science.

iv. General Agriculture Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (General Agriculture Option), must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in THREE (3) Electives: Chemistry plus either Physics or Mathematics and Biology or General Agriculture or Crop and Horticulture or Forestry or Fisheries.

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level or equivalent qualification including English Language and Mathematics, PLUS

THREE passes at the A’ Level or equivalent including Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants with a certificate in Forestry/Fisheries must have attained the age of 25 years, at the time of submitting the Application Forms, and a minimum of TWO (2) years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management, and

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,

OR

F. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

i. Science Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (Science Option), must in addition to credit Passes in the three (3) core subject (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in THREE (3) of the following Electives subjects: Chemistry, Biology, General Agriculture, Physics, Elective Mathematics, and Crop and Horticulture.

ii. General Arts Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (General Arts Option) must in addition to credit passes in the three (3) core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in any THREE (3) of the following Electives subjects: Elective Mathematics, Geography, Economics, Technical Drawing and General Knowledge in Art.

iii. Visual Art Applicants with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (Visual Art Option) must in addition to credit passes in the three (3) core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in any THREE (3) of the following Elective Subjects: General Knowledge in Art, Graphic Design, Chemistry, Picture Making and Sculpture.

2. ‘A’LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level or equivalent qualification including English Language and Mathematics, PLUS

THREE passes at the A’ Level or equivalent including Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants with a certificate in Forestry/Fisheries must have attained the age of 25 years, at the time of submitting the Application Forms, and a minimum of TWO (2) years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management, and

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,

OR

G. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. AQUACULTURE AND WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

An applicant with the SSSCE/WASSCE certificate (Science Option) must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), obtain credits in Chemistry plus either Physics or Mathematics and Biology or General Agriculture or Crop and Horticulture or Forestry or Fisheries.

2. ‘A’LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at the GCE O’ Level including English Language, and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, plus passes in at least THREE (3) subjects at the Advanced Level. Applicants with Agricultural Science or Mathematics must have a credit in O’ Level Biology.

Mature Applicants must have attained the age of 25 years at the time of submitting the application forms.

3. HND AND OTHER DIPLOMA HOLDERS

Applicants who have a relevant Diploma with Distinction may be admitted to Year Two (2) of the Programme after successful completion of their National Service. Other categories of relevant

Diploma holders may be admitted following Two (2) years’ Work Experience and subsequent interview or selection examination as may be deemed necessary. HND holders must have met all the requisite passes in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science at GCE O’ Level, WASSCE or equivalent.

4. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants with a certificate in Forestry/Fisheries must have attained the age of 25 years, at the time of submitting the Application Forms, and a minimum of TWO (2) years post qualification experience in a related field of Natural Resources Management, and

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,

OR

Credits in WASSCE/SSSCE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus THREE (3) Electives in Chemistry, and Physics or Elective Mathematics, Biology or General Agriculture.

H. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc. PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit Passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects from any of the following options:

Science, General Arts, Visual Arts, Technical and Home Economics.

2. A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’ Level or equivalent passes from any of the following options: Science, and General Arts.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be a least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application,

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including Mathematics and English Language,

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credit passes in THREE (3) Core Subjects plus credits in THREE (3) Elective Subjects in Science, General Arts, Technical, and Home Economics.

Short-listed applicants may take an Entrance Examination and pass an interview.

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including History or Government and any of the following: Economics, Geography, French, Ghanaian Language, Literature in

English, Religious Studies and any other General Arts Elective and a Pass in Social Studies.

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English Language and

Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes including History and/or Government and any One (1) or Two (2) of the following: Economics, Geography, French, Religious Studies and Ghanaian Language. Applicants must also have a pass in General Paper.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be a least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including Mathematics and English Language, History and/or Government,

OR

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Geography, (At A1-B3) and any TWO (2) of the following: Economics, Government, French, English Literature, Religious Studies, History, Elective Mathematics, Akan, and any other General Arts Elective.

2. ‘A’LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) Credits at the O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’ Level Passes including Geography and TWO (2) other subjects from the following: History, French, English, Akan, Religious Studies, Elective Mathematics and Economics. They must also obtain a pass in General Paper.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application Form.

EITHER

FIVE (5) Credits at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics.

(b) Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects one of which shall be Akan and any two from the following: History, Geography, Literature in English, French, Economics, Religious Studies, Government and Business Management.

2. ‘A’LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes, including French and/or Akan, and any TWO (2) of the following Subjects: Literature in English, Economics, Geography, Government, History, Business Management, any other Ghanaian Language, and Religious Studies. They must also have a pass in General Paper.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) Credits at the O’ Level, including English and Mathematics, French and/or Akan.

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credits in THREE (3) Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus credits in THREE (3) relevant Elective subjects including French and/or Akan and any ONE (1) or TWO (2) of the following: History, Literature in English, Economics, Government, Religious Studies, Business Management, Geography, Ghanaian Language and any other General Arts Elective. Group A: English Literature, Ghanaian Language (e.g. Twi, Fante, Ewe, and Ga), Foreign Language (e. g. French, Igbo, Wolof, and Yoruba)

(H) Credit passes in any THREE (3) Elective Subjects

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

(G) Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics plus THREE (3) A’ Level passes or equivalents in the TWO (2) Subject Groups below:

a. Either all Subjects from Group A or

b. Two (2) subjects from Group A, and one (1) subject from Group B

c. One (1) subject from Group A, and Two (2) subjects from Group B

GROUP A: English Literature, Ghanaian Language (e.g. Twi, Fante, Ewe, and Ga), Foreign Language (e. g. French, Igbo, Wolof, and Yoruba).

GROUP B: History, Geography, Economics, Religious Studies, Government, Business Management. They must also have a pass in General Paper

(H) Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics plus, THREE (3) A’ Level passes. They must also have a pass in General Paper.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

(G) Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application.,

(H) Applicants must have a diploma (Second Class Lower or better) in Communication Studies or a related course; e.g. Archival Studies, Journalism and International Relations.

I. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BA. SOCIOLOGY

J. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BA. SOCIAL WORK


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects, including any ONE of the following: History, Geography, Literature in English, French, Ghanaian Language, Government, Business Management, Elective Mathematics, Economics and other General Arts Elective and Science Electives.

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics, plus THREE (3) A’

A-Level passes, including any of the following: Government, Religious Studies, History, Economics, Literature in English, French, Ghanaian Language and Elective Mathematics.

They must also have a pass in General Paper.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at the ‘O Level including English and Mathematics.

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credits in THREE (3) Core Subjects: (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus THREE (3) Elective Subjects.

Applicants must pass a written examination and an interview.

4. DIPLOMA APPLICANTS

Applicant must possess Diploma in Social Work/Social Administration and any other relevant Diploma from an accredited university or Institution. Applicant must pass a written examination and interview. Such Applicant would be admitted into the second year of the Programme

K. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BA. RELIGIOUS STUDIES


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects in General Arts.

2. ‘A’LEVEL APPLICANTS

Applicants must have FIVE (5) credits at ‘O’ Level, including, English and Mathematics, plus a minimum of THREE (3) passes in the following ‘A’ Level subjects: Christian Religious Studies, History, Literature in English, French, Economics, Government and Geography.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the Application. The evidence of age should be supported by the submission of a valid Birth Certificate.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at the ‘O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics.

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects in General Arts.

4. DIPLOMA APPLICANTS

Applicants who possess a Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Religious Studies or Theology with a Minimum Grade “B+” from an Accredited University or Theological Seminary will be admitted into the SECOND YEAR of the Programme subject to passing an entrance examination and interview.

L. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BA. ECONOMICS


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Economics and Elective Mathematics, plus any One (1) of the following: History, Geography, Government, French, Literature in English, Ghanaian Language, Business Management, Costing, and Accounting. Applicants must have a minimum of grade C/B3 in Economics.

2. A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

FIVE (5) credits at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics, plus a minimum of TWO (2)

A’ Level passes, including Economics and any of the following: Geography, French, Literature in English, Business Management, History, Government etc. Applicants must also have a pass in General Paper.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level, including Economics, English and Mathematics.

OR

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects including Economics and Elective Mathematics plus any ONE (1) of the following: Geography, French, Government, History, Literature in English, and Business Management. Applicants must pass a written examination and interview.

Faculty of Law

ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BACHELOR OF LAW (LLB)


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS (Category I)

Credit passes in THREE (3) Elective Subjects in the following groups; General Arts; Business; Visual Arts or General Science.

2. ‘A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS (Category 1)

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ Level, including English Language and Mathematics, plus

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Mature students who have attained the age of 25 years or above at the time of application.

AND

Applicants must have obtained credit passes (A1-C6/ A-D) in the following Three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus credit passes (A1-C6/A-D) in three (3) elective subjects in Biology, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Physics at WASSCE/SSSCE. In addition, they must have worked for at least three (3) years. These applicants will be considered for admission into year one.

Candidates who have relevant Diploma certificates in Sports and Exercise Science, Fitness Assessment, Physiotherapy and Orthotic Assistant, coaching etc. and who must have worked for at least three (3) years will be considered for admission into year two.

In addition to all of the above, candidates must be declared medically fit by the University Hospital and must undergo a physical fitness assessment and must pass a(n) written and/or oral interview conducted at the Department.

4. TOP-UP (Fee-Paying Only)

A Degree in Pharmacy with at least THREE (3) years post-registration experience. An interview will be required.

Duration of the Programme: Two (2) years.

Mode of Delivery: Modular and sandwich. The taught courses will be delivered on-site with face-to-face interaction between Lecturer and Students on a schedule of an average of one week per month, coupled with E-Learning. The practical sections will take place at selected study sites.

1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credits in the THREE Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science) plus credits in THREE Elective Subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

2. A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Credits in at least FIVE ‘O’ Level Subjects including English Language and Mathematics and

Science or (its equivalent), plus THREE passes at the ‘A’ Level in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants should be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application, and possess:

FIVE (5) credits at the O’ level including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE credits in THREE (3) Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science) plus credits in THREE (3) relevant Elective Subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics

4. DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHERS


Applicants who are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) certified or equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum of THREE (3) years of working experience may apply. Mature applicants must also pass an interview.

L. ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR BSc PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTSHIP


1. WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credits passes in the THREE (3) Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus credit passes in THREE (3) Elective subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

2. A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level credits including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, plus Three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be at least 25 years at the time of submitting the application.

EITHER

FIVE (5) Credits at GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics.

OR

WASSCE/SSSCE Credit passes in THREE (3) Core Subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science) plus THREE (3) Elective subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics).

4. BACHELOR DEGREE HOLDERS


Bachelor degree holders in the Life Sciences (Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Technology, Herbal Medicine and Sports and Exercise Science,) will be placed in year two (2) of the programme whilst applicants with BSc. Nursing will be placed in year three (3) of the programme after a successful interview. Successful applicants will be exempted from some courses already studied.

5. OTHER APPLICANTS

Mature applicants (aged 25 years and above) who are holders of diploma in Physiotherapy, Dental Assistantship, Medical Assistants, Laboratory Technician programme, Pharmacy Technician programme and the Registered General Nursing Diploma with at least THREE (3) YEARS post-qualification experience and a good pass at the diploma level may be admitted to the first year of the programme after a successful interview. Such candidates may also be required to satisfy the University’s general requirements for admission to degree programmes.
