Mali's President Resigns After Military Coup

Mali's president resigns as president after a military coup.

Mali's Ibrahim Keita resigns from the post after a military mutiny.

The president of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced on Tuesday night that he is resigning from his position on the ticket that he does not wish blood to be shed in the country after the military coup.

In a statement made by the president on national television, he revealed that to a certain part of the military it is necessary to intervene but he does not have a chance other than resigning.

'Today, certain parts of the military have decided that intervention was necessary. Do I really have a choice? Because I do not wish blood to be shed,' he said.

President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse were all detained by soldiers.

The incident happened after the opposition took to the streets with a demonstration accusing the president of the country's collapsed economy and mishandling a worsening security situation and hence demanded him to step down.

African Union, European Union, France and West African Countries have condemned the actions of the military and warned against any unconstitutional change of government.

Meanwhile, foreign embassies have cautioned their citizens to stay indoors.
