In an unprecedented move, Somalia's Ministry of Communications and Technology has ordered internet service providers to shut down access to popular social media platforms TikTok and Telegram, as well as the gambling site 1xBet.

The decision, announced on Sunday by Minister Jama Hassan Khalif, cites national security and counterterrorism efforts, alongside concerns over the platforms' negative impact on the country's youth.

Khalif explained that the ban is a response to the exploitation of these platforms by terrorist groups and individuals spreading immoral content.

The ease of access to TikTok, Telegram, and 1xBet has led to a surge in usage among Somali youth, prompting concerns about their potential vulnerability to harmful influences.

The minister's statement read, "To accelerate the war against terrorists who have inflicted suffering on the Somali people, the minister of communication and technology instructs internet service providers to suspend TikTok, Telegram, and 1XBET betting applications. These platforms have been misused by groups promoting immorality and disseminating graphic content."

The decision has ignited a debate within Somalia, with some supporting the government's efforts to protect the country's moral fabric, while others express concerns about the restriction of online freedoms.

Critics argue that while addressing security concerns is vital, a blanket ban might hinder legitimate uses of the platforms and infringe on individuals' rights to access information.

Interestingly, this move comes as Kenya's National Assembly is reviewing a petition to ban TikTok, highlighting concerns about explicit content and insufficient regulation.
