Reasons Why Asantehene is Destooling Chiefs Revealed, Historian Safo Kantaka Explains

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Asante Kingdom

In a recent revelation, Osei-Bonsu Sarfo-Kantanka, a respected monarchical historian at the Manhyia Palace, has shed light on the reasons behind the ongoing destoolment of certain sub-chiefs by the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Speaking on the popular TV3 show, "Ghana Tonight," on Tuesday, August 22, Kantanka elaborated on the intricate dynamics of the chieftaincy institution.

He emphasized that the institution is governed by a set of rules and regulations that are deeply intertwined with cultural norms and traditions.

Just as any other institution has its established guidelines, so does the chieftaincy, and those within its ranks are expected to adhere to them.

Kantanka went on to clarify that within the Asante Kingdom, the Asantehene holds the highest authority within the hierarchical structure.

This gives him the power to destool any sub-chief who has been found engaging in activities that violate these rules and regulations.

The recent destoolments in 2023 have been carried out for a variety of reasons, ranging from abandoning their positions to involvement in illegal small-scale mining (known as galamsey) and disputes over land ownership.

"Chieftaincy institution has got its own way of life," Kantanka remarked. "The institution has got its rules and regulations in line with culture and tradition, just like any other institution has rules and regulations. So if you go against the rules and regulations in line with culture, then, of course, you have to be penalized for doing the wrong thing."

Highlighting the hierarchical nature of the Ashanti community, Kantanka reiterated that the Asantehene stands at the zenith of the chiefdom, overseeing the entire hierarchy of chiefs within the Asante community.

These insights provided by Osei-Bonsu Sarfo-Kantanka offer a glimpse into the complexities of the chieftaincy institution and the Asantehene's authority in ensuring that its rules and traditions are upheld.
