The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has experienced a remarkable surge in its monthly revenue, increasing from GH¢450 million to GH¢1.2 billion, thanks to a digital transformation initiative led by the government.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia revealed the success story during his speech at the Church of Pentecost's 2023 National Development Conference held at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region.
Dr. Bawumia explained that prior to the digitization of ECG's operations, the company's monthly revenue had remained fixed at GH¢450 million for a continuous four-year period.
Recognizing the anomaly, the government dispatched a team of experts to analyze the revenue structure of the company.
However, the team faced challenges as their efforts were hindered by malware introduced by some ECG staff members.
With the intervention of National Security, the problem was eventually resolved, and the digital transformation yielded impressive results.
ECG's monthly revenue skyrocketed to GH¢1.2 billion, marking a substantial increase that aligns with the company's growing customer base.
Vice President Bawumia highlighted that the government's digitization agenda not only contributed significantly to Ghana's economic growth but also curbed corruption.
"The constant value was almost the same. They didn’t even take time to change the value," said Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing the need for modernization and digitization in governmental institutions.
He also mentioned that initially, some digitization processes faced resistance, but people are now embracing the changes, leading to improved services and transparency.
During the conference, the Vice President reiterated the government's commitment to alleviating economic challenges such as soaring inflation and exchange rate depreciation.
He affirmed that despite facing setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, Ghana's economy was on a path to recovery and growth.
The event saw influential speakers from various fields, including the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, and notable international personalities.
Dr. Bawumia commended the Church of Pentecost for organizing the conference, stating that a morally upright society is essential for national development.
The success story of ECG's revenue increase stands as a testament to the transformative power of digitization in driving economic growth and efficiency, offering hope for a brighter future for Ghana and its citizens.
