The renowned Brazilian soccer star Pelé's funeral will take place at the same stadium where he played some of his best matches on Monday and Tuesday.
According to Santos, the Brazilian team where Pelé played, the general public will be able to pay their final respects at Vila Belmiro Stadium, outside of Sao Paulo.
After a long battle with cancer, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, passed away on Thursday. He was 82.
The three-time World Cup champion's coffin, according to Santos, will leave Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital early on Monday and be placed on the field's center circle.
Visitation on Monday will start at 10 a.m. and finish the next day at the same time.
Pelé's funeral procession will pass in front of the home of his 100-year-old mother Celeste after traveling through the streets of Santos. Recent reports in Brazilian media suggest that Pelé's mother is unconscious and unable to get out of bed.
The burial will take place in the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, a vertical cemetery in Santos. It will only be family members.
Pelé owns a house there, having lived there most of his life. He lived out his final years in Guarujá.
Pelé had a colon tumor removed in September 2021. His family and the hospital have not revealed if the illness has spread to other organs.
Infected with COVID-19 and a respiratory illness, he returned to the Albert Einstein medical hospital on November 29.
Last Monday, the hospital released a statement saying that his cancer had progressed.
Pelé led Brazil to World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970. His 77 goals still rank among the team's all-time leading scorers. Neymar equaled Pelé's record during this year's World Cup in Qatar.
