Commonwealth And Mensah Sarbah Hall Students Clash With Legon Security

A fight broke out Tuesday morning at the University of Ghana, Legon, between several students from the Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall.

The altercation occurred as a consequence of an effort by campus security to prevent the students from holding a combined press conference in protest of the management's recent decision to reassess the residential status of enrolled students in the two halls.

The students did not have the authorization to hold the press conference, according to the University Security, which was subsequently bolstered by officers from the Ghana Police Service.

The management's choice, which was announced in a communiqué on December 14th, was not acceptable to the students, who wished to voice their disapproval.

All continuing male students of Mensa Sarbah Hall and Commonwealth Hall, both of which are all-male residence halls, will not go back to their respective residence halls or any of the traditional residence halls, according to the ruling.

“They are to be randomly assigned to available rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels,” the communique said.

“Continuing female students of Mensah Sarbah Hall and students with special needs in both halls will not be affected by this measure,” it added.

The University Council made the decision in response to frequent altercations involving students from the two halls, the most recent of which occurred on Friday, August 5.
