As of September 1st of this year, only 32% of the entire Ghanaian population had received the full COVID-19 pandemic vaccination, according to Mr Solomon Gayoni, Secretary-General of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS).

He revealed this in an interview conducted in the midst of a Poliomyelitis vaccine monitoring, community education, and sensitization effort by the GRCS at Abi, a farming community close to Jinijini in the Berekum West District of the Bono area.

According to Mr Gayoni, the goal of the exercise was to guarantee that no kid of the polio immunization age will be excluded from the existing national immunization campaign.

Many individuals, he said, had only had the first dose of the COVID-19 immunization and had not received the second dose or the booster, and he blamed this on "vaccination hesitation" brought on by myths and religious convictions.

According to Mr Gayoni, this made it necessary to raise awareness of the continuing Poliomyelitis vaccine campaign among the vulnerable and difficult-to-reach areas.
