According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Africa has the highest rate of suicide deaths in the world now.
Six of the ten nations with the highest suicide rates worldwide are located in Africa, according to a statement from the organization.
One psychiatrist is reportedly present for every 500,000 people on the continent, which is 100 times fewer than what the WHO recommends.
the World Health Organization revealed that about 11 people per 100,000 per year die by suicide in the African region which is higher than the global average of nine per 100,000 persons.
It went on to say that up to 11% of the risk factors for suicide are mental health issues.
The organization also noted that most mental health professionals on the continent work in cities.
Suicide is a significant public health issue, but prevention is rarely given top priority in national health initiatives, according to Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa.
In order to increase awareness and spur action, the organization has recently started a social media suicide prevention campaign in the continent.
Prior to October 10th's World Mental Health Day, a social media campaign was started.
Over the course of the continent, the WHO hopes to reach 10 million people.
